A Few Words
The Sitia Global Geopark presents significant geodiversity, as more than 10 different types of rocks can be observed in its area (https://sitia-geopark.gr/), which created the conditions for the formation of numerous geomorphs. Among these rocks, some played a decisive role in human activities from antiquity to the present day. More specifically, very old rocks (phyllites-quartzites aged between 259 and 227 million years) are found, which contain interbedded limestones (marbles). These rocks, due to the forces that acted upon them over millions of years, have developed hardness and an impressive appearance, characteristics particularly useful for the construction of buildings. Additionally, the area features occurrences of younger rocks such as marls and sandstones aged 8.7 to 10.154 million years, and aeolianites (wind-transported and compacted sand) aged 1.806 to 0.126 million years. These rocks are softer and more sensitive to water, which makes them more suitable for use in the interior parts of buildings.
