Geopark
A geopark is a defined geographical area that includes significant geological features such as geological formations, fossils, caves, minerals, and volcanic landscapes. A geopark often focuses not only on geology but also encompasses ecological, cultural, and archaeological elements.
UNESCO Global Geoparks (UGGp) are single, unified geographical areas where sites and landscapes of international geological significance are managed with a holistic approach that combines protection, education, and sustainable development. Their distinctive feature is their “bottom-up” approach, which integrates conservation with sustainable development while actively involving local communities.
The purpose of a geopark is:
- the preservation and protection of the area’s natural and cultural heritage, with an emphasis on its geological features.
- the promotion of education and public awareness regarding geology, the environment, and sustainable development
- the support of scientific research
- the promotion of ecotourism, the local economy, and the development of local communities through the sustainable use of natural resources with respect for the environment
Thematic geotrails
A thematic geotrail is a carefully designed route that highlights and explains the geological, natural, and/or cultural features of an area, aiming to promote education, recreation, and sustainable development.
These routes are particularly important for geoparks, as they showcase geological heritage and help foster understanding of geological phenomena, the history of the Earth, and their interaction with the natural and human-made environment.
Furthermore, they strengthen the local economy through geotourism and promote the preservation of geological monuments, supporting the sustainable management of natural resources.
