Sitia UNESCO Global Geopark
A Few Words
Sitia UNESCO Global Geopark, located in the eastern part of Crete (within the Municipality of Sitia), is one of Greece’s most impressive geological and natural sites. Recognized by UNESCO as part of the Global Geoparks Network since 2015, the geopark covers an area of approximately 517 km² and is home to 17,100 inhabitants.
Geologically, the uniqueness of this geopark lies in the simple way it narrates the geological history of the Eastern Mediterranean. It is particularly famous for its speleological and paleontological richness.
However, the identity of the area is also significantly shaped by its abundant archaeological treasures, which represent the evolution of people in the Eastern Mediterranean. The identity of the area is further shaped by its inhabitants themselves, due to their kind nature, hospitality and cultural wealth.
The geopark’s headquarters are located in Sitia, with an Information Center in Zakros and a Hospitality Center in Karidi village amongst others. The geopark is managed by the Municipal Organization of Sitia. To date, over 100 geosites and a variety of road, cycling, and hiking routes have been designated.
